There are an estimated 15 million hearing impaired people in Japan today. But the rate of hearing aid use
is only 14.1%*, a greater than twofold gap compared to Western countries. This situation inspired us to
develop comuoon, an entirely new communication support system that works by assisting the speaker
instead of the hearing-impaired listener. The clear sounds generated by comuoon are creating a world of
truly effortless clear hearing for the hearing impaired.

Locations such as healthcare, welfare and educational facilities create an abundance of opportunities for
routine contact with the hearing impaired. Using comuoon eliminates the stress of both speaker and

Communication is the foundation of healthcare
We use comuoon in the consultation rooms of the hospital where
I work. Typically, hearing impaired patients bring family members with them when receiving healthcare. The healthcare provider will generally speak normally with the family member, and then later the same information is repeated to the patient. But comuoon lets the patient hear the information as soon as it is provided, making communication much smoother. It makes communication more efficient, and it’s also great for patient morale. A lot of the mistakes made by healthcare providers are caused by miscommunication. So I think comuoon is going to be increasingly important as Japan’s population ages.

Effortless hearing makes learning fun
Our school uses comuoon in classes for the hearing impaired. When we first introduced it, we used it experimentally in English classes and were overwhelmed by the positive response we got from students who said it improved their hearing. K, S and T sounds are particularly difficult for the hearing impaired to distinguish. I’ve worked in classes to the hearing impaired for over 30 years, and was frankly amazed that students reported being able to make out even these difficult sounds. Conventional educational methods for hearing impaired children have focused on converting auditory information to visual information. comuoon is a revolutionary system that enables the auditory information to be kept intact, while conveying it more clearly. It’s helped reduce student dislike for English classes, making them eager to learn while having fun.

A leader in education for the hearing impaired in Tokyo, Yamaguchi has led classes and worked at schools to the hearing impaired for 33 years. His classes for the hearing impaired attract students from other schools, and his fine-tuned teaching methods are designed to foster enthusiasm and communication ability.
Correctly interpreting spoken words often depends on picking up the sounds of consonants, which have a higher frequency than the relatively low-frequency vowel sounds. The letters K, S and T are consonant sounds with particularly high frequencies. The frequency characteristic covering these sounds is created by a box-shaped characteristic.
For sound frequencies above 2 kHz, comuoon’s unique egg-shaped design and optimal speaker placement creates a directionality oriented sharply in front of the speaker. This design inhibits sound reverberations off indoor walls, creating clear voice reproduction.
Kyushu University’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology has verified the usefulness of comuoon when making house calls to patients with moderate hearing impairments of about 70 dB (including those with sensorineural hearing loss), who were not wearing hearing aids. They have verified its high effectiveness even for patients with age-related hearing loss.
